We’ve been watching the coverage of the oil spill in our house for weeks now, and it’s not getting any better. They are on “Plan G” to try to stop it, and it’s still pumping barrel after barrel of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. BP is powerless to stop it, the government is powerless to stop it, and the oil just keeps coming. And if this latest attempt doesn’t stop it, they tell us its two months at the soonest before the relief wells can be dug.
Meghan and I were talking about it, and she wondered if this was the end of offshore drilling. I said I didn’t know how it couldn’t be. If we’ve got companies that are so ill prepared to handle a crisis like this one, I don’t know how in good conscience we can continue. What we need is not more oil, we will run out of that in my lifetime. What we need is a solution to our bigger problem of finding a replacement. Unfortunately, without a proper monetary incentive, companies will remain short-sighted and continue to drill because that is working now and there is no reason not to. We need to see past all this and look to the future.
It was in that same conversation with Meghan that she brought up an interesting point. She said that God brought lots of plagues in the Bible and plenty of foreign invaders to the people of Israel. He did this to show them the things that needed to change. Meghan mentioned that if God was going to bring a plague today, it wouldn’t be locust; it would be something like this. Now I’m not saying that this is a plague, but what I am saying is that if God wanted to point out our selfishness and greed to show us what needed to change, He would do something like this. It seems interesting to me that a machine that is used for selfishness and greed is now pointing out those vices in our country. Hopefully we’ll heed the warning and do something good before we face a real plague.
