Oops

Sometimes we make mistakes. We have “oops” moments. We do things or say things we don’t really mean. Or we say things and they come out totally different from how we intended them. In John 11:49-52, Caiaphas, the high priest in charge of the manhunt for Jesus, has a classic “oops” moment.

“Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! 50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish." 51He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, 52and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.

Did you catch that? He meant that Jesus should die so that the Romans don’t come in and destroy all of Israel, but looking back on history we can see the double meaning. In an attempt to stop the movement of God, Caiaphas’ words show just how what they are doing is really going to take Jesus ministry to its ultimate goal, the redemption of people all over the world.

As I thought about this amazing turnaround in Caiaphas’ speech, I started thinking about my own life. I don’t ever want this to me, doing God’s will by accident. I don’t want God to have to turn one of my “oops” moments into something meaningful. Instead, I want to serve God with everything, on purpose. No more “oops” for Christ, from now on I choose to focus everything on Him and serve Him deliberately.
