Extremes

In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s very dry here.  Where I live, in the Panhandle of Texas, there is no moisture.  Ever.  Even when it rains it’s just balls of dust falling from the sky.  My eyes or so red it looks like I should be an extra in some upcoming vampire movie.  My skin is so dry I’m starting to sympathize with lepers.  This is getting out of hand.

Now, before I moved here I lived in Florida.  Where it rains.  Every day.  The humidity is so high there I can remember one afternoon just swimming home from work.  The difference is staggering, and even though I’ve lived here for four years now, I still haven’t gotten used to it.

Sometimes in life it feels like we live in the extremes.  We go from one end of the spectrum to another, and there is very little in between.  We feel this tension as we seek some kind of balance and only end up tipping the scales. God gives us those moments, both the goods and the bads, so that we can have a full life.  Jesus said that He would grant his followers “abundant life” and if life is full of ups and downs, it seems to me that when I follow Christ I still have those ups and downs, they are now even more pronounced.  I love that no matter what extreme condition we are living in, what extreme situation we are going through, what extreme pain or joy we are experiencing, Jesus is right there with us.
