A while ago I was watching the bonus features from Toy Story (I am a bonus feature junkie, especially with Disney/Pixar stuff) and there was a segment talking about the Pixar studio itself. It mentioned the fact that at Pixar they have a cereal bar. It’s free for all employees, and they can go and get cereal any time they want it. There were reports of people at their desks eating cereal, people in meetings eating cereal, and even people riding around on scooters eating cereal.
I thought this was the coolest idea, and so I set out to create a small scale facsimile of this concept in my own office. As an early Christmas present, my wife got me a refrigerator for my office to hold the milk (well, she went halfsies with my mother-in-law, so thanks to her as well). Now the cereal can sit on top with bowls and spoons, and I can have cereal anytime I want, as well as anyone else in the church. This is not about breakfast; rather it’s about eating a snack and having fun. It’s about cereal in staff meeting. It’s about cereal at 4:00 pm because I was coocoo for Cocoa Puffs. Cereal is not just for breakfast anymore.
In the same way we pigeonhole cereal for just the morning, often we think about God only at church. I’m guilty of this myself. I work at a church, but even all the time I’m here I’m not always thinking about Him. He is not a constant influence in my life like I know He wants to be. I’m thinking about the email I have to write or the letters that need to be mailed. I’m thinking about the phone call I forgot to make today or the list of things to do. These things clutter our minds, and we choose not to include God in them. We don’t pray about these things, instead we save our prayers for meals, maybe a devotion, and church. It’s time to start making God a part of everyday, not just Sunday.
