We put our Christmas tree up this past week. It was cute to watch my daughter respond to the ornaments that we have, which are mostly Disney characters. She doesn’t know all their names, but she can repeat most of them when we say them. She had a fun time seeing them all, and she is good about being gentle with them. Her favorite thing is making them swing (since she likes swinging, why wouldn’t Buzz and Woody?)
The thing about Christmas that I am enjoying is watching in through the eyes of my child. There is a joy when the tree lights come on in her eyes that I just love. It’s awesome to think of all the memories we have in store for us. She’s still too young to understand everything, but I like to see the wheels in her head start working.
As we get older, we lose the ability to be impressed by something so simple as lights on a tree. We want the “perfect Christmas” which usually includes getting all the right gifts at the right price. We say that Christmas is about “joy to the world” but for the most part it’s “happiness to the consumer.” We settle for a Christmas that makes us happy rather than a Christ that gives us joy. This year let’s remember that it’s not about the getting or the giving, but it’s about knowing Christ.
