Yesterday I came back from lunch to see my Twitter account buzzing with information about an earthquake. As I began to put the pieces together, what I soon realized was that the epicenter of the quake was only a few miles from where my family lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. After waiting for cell phone service to open up in the area, I was able to speak to all my family and several friends to see that they are ok, but the whole incident left me, well, shaken up.
The thing about it was that over lunch we were talking about natural disasters. We mentioned the tornados that were out of control this year, and the flooding that rocked the middle of the country. We talked about how dry and hot it’s been here. Then we were talking about the hurricane that’s headed toward the east coast. And I made the statement that it was my belief that these natural disasters were evidence of God trying to get our attention, and that I believed this was going to be an exceptionally bad hurricane season as well.
I am worried about my friends and family that live in the hurricane zone, and even though the earthquake yesterday didn’t cause major damage, it’s the first time in over 100 years that anything like that has happened there. I think God is doing some serious work on our country, and I don’t think the economic issues we face are a coincidence either. He is calling us to repent, to turn from our sin and to follow Him with everything.
And repentance always starts with me.
