The other day I saw a guy outside our local Bank of America with a protest sign. I know there is a lot of stuff going on in our world today with the banks, the government, and greed. My point here is not to comment on any of those things, but rather to give some of my first reactions to seeing this local demonstration.
1) First of all, this was one guy. I mean, I appreciate your willingness to stand up for what you believe in, but a real protest needs scores of people. The Occupy Wall Street movement is huge, and there are tons of people camped out. This guy couldn’t find any friends to protest with him? Really?
2) This guy was older, definitely in his 60s. And that’s cool, but protesting is really a younger mans game. I mean, how long can he be out there making his opinions known, Wheel of Fortune starts at 6! And what is he going to care if Tom Morello comes and plays?
3) I felt for the guy, but at the same time, I kinda needed to go to the bank that day. I was in my friend’s car, so we just drove by instead. I almost felt like going in, making my deposit, and then grabbing a sign and hanging out with him, you know, just so he would have some company.
I’m not really into protests that much, and while I found some things comical about this situation, there was one thing that stuck with me. He was willing to stand up for what he believed in regardless of the fact that no one else stood with him. And who knows, I may see more people with him today (I do still have to go to the bank). He may start a movement. If only those who believe in Christ would have the same attitude toward our faith. We don’t know what God may use us to do if we are willing to start by standing alone for what we believe in.
