I am a fan of the “Life is Good” clothing line. If you are not familiar with this company, they make t-shirts, hats, and other items that focus on the simple things in life that people enjoy. Their products are high quality and they are fun to wear.
What you may not know about these products is that on each shirt there is a small tag somewhere that features the company’s philosophy. It says “Do what you like; like what you do.” To some degree this can be seen as kind of hedonistic, focusing on ourselves and on our own personal pleasures. However, in light of some spiritual things I’ve been thinking about recently, I started to see this concept in a new light.
God gives to each believer a spiritual gift, an area of life and ministry that they are passionate about and skilled in. This is what we were meant to do for Him, this is His will for our lives, our reason for being. And the best part it, we already like it. It’s already a part of who we are, our spiritual DNA. God is calling us to do for Him what we already like, to work in an area that we are already passionate about or burdened for.
Discovering God’s will for our lives starts by doing what we like, and then the next thing is to like what we do. Any church leader will tell you they don’t need warm bodies to help their ministry, what they need are people who love helping in specific areas. When we use our gifting with passion and excitement, when we love serving the Lord, our lives become what God wants them to be.
Do what you like.
Like what you do.
Serving God and finding our purpose never sounded so simple, but I truly believe that when we do those things we find what our lives are really supposed to be about.
